Iceland –Hiking Guide

Iceland is one of the most extraordinary hiking destinations on the planet — a raw, volcanic world of glaciers, lava fields, geothermal valleys and endless skies. It demands preparation, respect for nature and a willingness to embrace unpredictability. This guide covers everything you need to know before lacing up your boots.

Iceland is a sparsely populated island in the North Atlantic, shaped entirely by volcanic and geothermal forces. Its hiking areas span the entire country — from dramatic coastal cliffs and ancient lava fields to remote highland plateaus and glacial edges that feel like the edge of the world.

Iceland rewards hikers who come prepared and punishes those who don’t.

Icelandic terrain is unlike anywhere else in the world — visually stunning but physically demanding and often deceptive underfoot:

  • Lava fields and volcanic deserts with unstable footing
  • Glaciers, snowfields and ice caps requiring specialist gear
  • Black sand plains and wide, fast-flowing river crossings
  • Steep coastal cliffs, highland plateaus and geothermal valleys
  • Mossy terrain that looks solid but is extremely fragile

Trails can be faint or completely unmarked, especially in the Highlands. What looks like a path may disappear entirely after a few hundred metres.

Iceland’s most celebrated hiking routes offer some of the most dramatic scenery in the world:

  • Laugavegur Trail — 55 km, 4–5 days, from Landmannalaugar to Þórsmörk. Iceland’s most iconic multi-day trek through rhyolite mountains, hot springs and black sand deserts
  • Fimmvörðuháls — 25 km, 1–2 days, connecting Þórsmörk to Skógar. Crosses between two glaciers with views over Eyjafjallajökull
  • Kjölur Route (Kjölvegur) — 200 km highland crossing between Gullfoss and Blönduós. Remote, raw and for experienced hikers only
  • Hornstrandir Nature Reserve — Arctic fox territory in the remote Westfjords. Accessible only by boat in summer
  • Snæfellsjökull National Park — Coastal and glacier routes on the iconic peninsula immortalised by Jules Verne
Most highland routes are only accessible between late June and early September. Always check current conditions before departing.

Iceland caters to a wide range of hiking styles, but difficulty should never be underestimated:

  • Short scenic day hikes near Reykjavik and the Ring Road
  • Multi-day trekking routes with hut-to-hut or wild camping options
  • Remote highland crossings requiring navigation and river-crossing skills
  • Glacier-adjacent and glacier-access routes requiring crampons and ice axes

There is no standardised national difficulty scale. Difficulty is determined by terrain, remoteness, weather exposure and river crossings — not just distance or elevation gain.

Right of access: Iceland permits access to nature, but within strict boundaries. Off-trail hiking is forbidden in fragile environments. Moss-covered lava fields must never be walked on — recovery takes centuries. Driving or walking off designated routes can result in significant fines.

Protected areas: National parks and nature reserves enforce specific rules. Staying on marked paths is mandatory in most areas. Camping outside designated campsites is forbidden. Drones are prohibited. Disturbing wildlife or vegetation is illegal.

Environmental damage is taken extremely seriously in Iceland. Rangers actively patrol popular areas and fines are enforced.
  • Trail markings vary significantly and are often minimal or absent
  • Cairns may indicate routes but are unreliable and can be misleading
  • GPS devices, downloaded offline maps and navigation skills are essential
  • Visibility can drop to near zero within minutes due to fog, rain or storms
  • Popular apps: Maps.me, Gaia GPS, ViewRanger — always download offline maps
Do not rely solely on phone GPS. Carry a dedicated GPS device or printed maps as backup.

Wild camping is largely forbidden across Iceland. Camping is permitted only in designated campsites.

Huts (mountain huts): The Icelandic Touring Association (FÍ) operates a network of mountain huts along popular routes like Laugavegur. Booking in advance is essential in summer — huts fill up months ahead.

Campsite costs: Expect to pay approximately 1,500–2,500 ISK per person per night (roughly €10–17). Some highland campsites are basic with no facilities.

Bivouacking outside designated campsites is generally illegal. Exceptions are rare and location-specific.

River crossings are one of the most serious hazards in Icelandic hiking and a leading cause of accidents and fatalities:

  • Many routes involve multiple unbridged river crossings
  • Water levels can rise dramatically within hours due to rain or glacial melt
  • Water temperatures are near-freezing even in summer
  • Always unbuckle your pack straps before crossing
  • Cross at the widest, shallowest point — never near rapids
  • Use trekking poles for stability and cross with a partner when possible
Never attempt a crossing if you are unsure. Waiting hours for water levels to drop is always the right decision.

Iceland’s weather demands high-quality, layered gear regardless of the season:

  • Waterproof shell jacket and trousers — non-negotiable in all seasons
  • Insulating mid-layer — fleece or down, even in summer
  • Waterproof hiking boots with ankle support
  • Trekking poles — essential for river crossings and lava terrain
  • Gaiters — for wet and volcanic terrain
  • Buff, gloves and hat — wind chill is severe even in July
  • Emergency bivvy bag — lightweight and potentially life-saving
  • Crampons and ice axe — required for any glacier approach
  • Offline maps downloaded to GPS device or phone

Mountain rescue in Iceland is generally free of charge, but rescue teams are largely volunteer-based. Irresponsible behaviour puts rescuers at serious risk. Operations in remote areas may take many hours or days.

Always leave a detailed travel plan with someone who knows when to raise the alarm if you don’t return.

Iceland’s weather is famously volatile. The saying goes: “If you don’t like the weather, wait five minutes.” Key hazards include:

  • Sudden storms and extreme wind gusts — strong enough to knock you off your feet
  • Cold exposure and rapid onset hypothermia
  • Volcanic terrain instability and geothermal hazards
  • Flash flooding from glacial melt (jökulhlaup)
  • Whiteout conditions in highland areas
  • Limited or no shelter across large stretches of open terrain
Always check the Icelandic Met Office forecast at vedur.is before and during your hike. Conditions can change within minutes.
  • Late spring (May–early June): Limited access; significant snow remains in highlands. Some lower routes open.
  • Summer (late June–August): Main hiking season. Nearly 24 hours of daylight. Most highland routes open. Huts and campsites busy — book well in advance.
  • Early autumn (September): Fewer crowds, dramatic colours, but routes begin closing and weather deteriorates quickly.
  • Winter (October–April): Hiking extremely limited. Specialist mountaineering and ice climbing only. Northern lights season.
The sweet spot is late June to mid-August — maximum daylight, best weather odds and all major routes open.
  • Drone use is highly restricted across Iceland
  • Prohibited in all national parks and protected areas
  • Additional aviation authority regulations apply nationwide
  • Permits required for commercial drone use
Flying a drone without authorisation in a protected area can result in significant fines. Check current regulations before travelling.
