Tunisia is North Africa’s most accessible and underrated hiking destination — a compact country where the High Tell Atlas, the Dorsal mountain range, the Saharan dunes of the Grand Erg Oriental and the extraordinary Star Wars filming locations of Matmata and Mos Espa all converge. Jebel Chambi (1,544m) is the country’s highest peak and an accessible day hike, while the Ichkeul NP wetlands, the Kroumirie cork-oak forests and the moonscapes of the Chott el-Djerid salt lake provide extraordinarily diverse hiking within a few hours of Tunis.
