HISTORIC BUILDINGS: DUNGAN MOSQUE (built 1910 without nails, extraordinary Chinese-Islamic architecture) + RUSSIAN ORTHODOX CHURCH (built 1895 by Russian settlers — incongruous but beautiful). KARAKOL SKI BASE: USSR-era ski resort on the mountain above (operating Dec–Mar). The CBT office on the main square is one of the best in Kyrgyzstan for organizing treks, guides, and horse rental. KARAKOL BAZAAR: excellent Saturday animal market (largest in Issyk-Kul oblast).
