– Short Description: KARAVSHIN VALLEY (Batken Oblast) = the WILD WEST of Kyrgyzstan. Home of some of the world’s most extraordinary granite towers: USENGI GORGE towers, ASKER TOWER, POBIEDA SOUTH PILLAR. World-class ROCK CLIMBING (technical, rarely attempted, reference: ‘American Alpine Journal’ expeditions). The area is also the site of the 2000 BATKEN HOSTAGE CRISIS (4 American climbers held by IMU militants for 6 days before escaping). Tourism is slowly recovering but the area remains very adventurous. Absolutely for experienced wilderness travelers only.
